Back to Savile Row....

Alexander McQueen has just opened the doors to their men’s flagship store at 9 Savile Row. McQueen’s Sarah Burton conveiced the store concept with David Collins Studio, who were also responsible for the new women’s store concept. “The flagship will provide the largest offering for the men’s ready-to-wear line and accessories with plans to develop an in-house bespoke tailoring service housed at the workshop in the basement of the store.” The original parquet flooring remains. Plaster panels, which look like classic pieces, have been designed with McQueen motifs throughout... It's great to see the full circle bringing McQueen back to where the late designer first trained as a tailor.

Alexander McQueen S/S 2012....

I love the new Alexander McQueen S/S 2012 Campaign featuring Polish model Zuzanna Bijoch. The gorgeous images were photographed by David Sims.

"I was thinking about a woman as an object of desire. We go to such lengths to adorn ourselves that we almost become our clothes or are taken over by them. This is a collection about excess - an exploration of ideals of beauty at their most extreme.” Sarah Burton

What would McQueen Do?

Beautifully filmed with the sounds of crashing waves this is a great short film call "Diving for McQueen." Cathy Horyn, The New York Times fashion critic got a behind the scenes look at the Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Film in Paris at the label’s atelier, Horyn is given a change to explore the McQueen world with Creative Director Sarah Burton.

So eloquently she explains "A McQueen girl-she has to feel powerful, she's never a girlie girl, she's always a woman" and the direction for the marine-inspired gowns. Burton has truly upheld the aesthetic for this groundbreaking and provocative label, pushing forward, and always focusing on the technique and craft.

Daphne Guinness- Contra Mundum.......

Could Daphne Guinness be anymore fascinating....??? Documentary filmmaker Brennan Stasiewicz got to peek inside Guinness’ posh Fifth Avenue apartment and capture intimate moments as she was preparing for her Met Gala performance piece back in May. "Daphne’s Window," is a beautifully narrated short film where she both refers to herself as “completely normal” and ummmm “shy!” (Two characteristics I would definitely not have called her. She must have Michael Jackson syndrome....) because those are traits not commonly associated with people wearing lilac feathered couture gowns designed by McQueen’s Sarah Burton, and stand on display in the storefront window of Barneys New York flagship store..... But I guess Daphne Guinness heiress of the Guinness fortune has always been a bit of an enigma!

Modestly wearing Contra Mundum, (Daphne’s 1.76 million dollar platinum and diamond glove) by jeweller Shaun Leane she so eloquently described the way in which fashion can be used as armor to make someone who is sort of tiny and feeble, a little more frightening. Truly a fashion Icon, this video had be captivated since the start of the ticking metronome and sound of her voice.... I loved the quote, "When I start doing something visual it's because I can't express it in words!" (true words I live by!)

"I don't think about myself in the world... Me is nothing, I'm just someone living in 2011! I just am... What I am!" -Daphne Guinness

For me, she is the future.....

Lady Gaga won the CFDA's Fashion Icon award, Monday night at New York's Lincoln Center.

As she accepted her award, Gaga told the story of how she heard the news. She recieved a text message from "Anna" whom she explained thought was her friend Anna Trevelyan, Nicola Formichetti's assistant. So Gaga texted back "Yes, bitch, we did it!", only to quickly discover that the 'Anna' in question was none other than Anna Wintour, the editor of US Vogue.....

And without missing a beat Anna Wintour replied: "That's lovely."

Here's a great quote from Nicola Formichetti/McQueen:

“In the beginning, it was tricky calling in clothes for Gaga because none of the designers wanted to work with her with the exception of Lee [Alexander McQueen] and Miuccia Prada. They were both supportive from the beginning. I remember every single designer who said no. I will never forget [Laughs.] And since then, every single designer has come back asking to work with her. So, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha [In a mock evil voice.] But seriously, who else would you want to see in your clothes? When I styled her in McQueen for ‘Bad Romance’ I just wanted to get her into the next phase of high, high, high concept. Lee said, ‘For me, she is the future.’”

Sarah Burton for McQueen....

Sarah Burton, McQueen’s second in command, has been named the brand’s new creative director.

Burton joined McQueen in 1996, just a year before her graduation from Central St. Martins. In 2000, she was named head of womenswear design, and most recently she was credited with finishing McQueen’s AW10 collection after his suicide. Burton told Vogue UK, “The creation of modern, beautifully crafted clothes was at the heart of Lee’s vision. I intend to stay true to his legacy.” When Gucci Group announced plans to continue the Alexander McQueen label after Lee’s death, many were not pleased. Rumors swirled about McQueen’s replacement, often citing Gareth Pugh as an obvious choice. Others wanted the brand to lay dormant for some years, continuing accessories and McQ lines until enough time had passed to bring on another superstar designer.

But we’re happiest with this choice. Ms. Burton has spent nearly 16 years working at McQueen, and based on the AW10 collection, we’re confident that she has what it takes to continue McQueen’s legacy and contribute new concepts. All we can do now is wait. Gucci Group did not say when Burton’s first collection would debut. We’re hoping for March 2011, but as of now, we’ll just have to wait and see.

L’Officiel Paris Tribute to Alexander McQueen......

L’Officiel Paris has released a 153 page, 1,000 image tribute to Alexander McQueen. This soon to be collector’s item documents the designer’s short history from Lee’s days at Givenchy to his final menswear collection shown in January. I must get my hands on one of these.

Lee Alexander McQueen's Final show, All Angels and Demons........

16 looks, the last collection we will ever see from iconic designer by Lee Alexander McQueen for his label. Presented in a private showing in Paris, the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive: "In their artistry, imagination and technical wizardry, they brought his fashion spirit to life," said WWD. Show-goers and McQueen's business partners alike were overcome with emotion.
Robert Polet, chairman and chief executive officer at Gucci Group, was overcome as he rushed backstage to see the design team backstage. “It was a very moving experience to take a deep and serious look at his last collection. It showed Lee's unique talent to create pieces of beauty that touch many of your senses, leaving one enriched,” Polet said later, after composing himself. Then he added, “Although the sense of loss afterwards, I found overwhelming.”

Before his death, McQueen told LOVE: "I’m 40 now, but I want this to be a company that lives way beyond me, and I believe that customers are more important to making that happen than press. When I’m dead, hopefully this house will still be going. On a spaceship. Hopping up and down above the earth.” For the moment, the design future of the label rests on the shoulders of the studio team led by Burton. “That will continue for the foreseeable future,” a spokesman said.

McQueen was my favorite artist with talent that knew no bounds and his attention to detail will forever blow my mind!

Plato's Atlantis.......

I love the magical world that is Alexander McQueen's... His fixation with intricate symmetrical patterns and obsessive attention to detail for his Spring 2010 collection is breathtaking. According to Style.com, this latest collection entitled "Plato's Atlantis" was created to cast an apocalyptic forecast of the future ecological meltdown of the world. With humankind made up of creatures that evolved from the sea, McQueen used fashion to demonstrate how man may be heading back to an underwater future as the ice cap dissolves. The lost continent of Atlantis. It starts in 355 B.C. with the Greek philosopher Plato. As legend goes, 9000 years before the time of Plato, after the people of Atlantis became corrupt and greedy, Plato writes that the gods decided to destroy them. A violent earthquake shook the land, giant waves rolled over the shores, and the island sank into the sea, never to be seen again.

Is McQueen's collection a modern day work of fiction... Or is it an ancient premonition come to life, because unbeknownst to McQueen, his collection bares an uncanny similarity to another ecologically destructive force. "The Moth"

The moth. Sturdy and more resistant to pesticides than mosquitoes and flies, moths are one of the most devastating creatures to our natural forests (destroying a million acres of trees every year.) They have also been known to swarm entire cities, traveling upwards of 100 kilometers a day by hitching a ride on high-altitude winds. Amazing how something so tiny and beautiful can wreak such havoc, a reaffirmation that none of us are immune to catastrophic disaster.
